What is Medicare Supplement Insurance?

When an individual turns 65, Medicare is there to cover most medical expenses for things such as doctor visits and health care. However, Medicare actually does not cover everything, leaving you to cover the gaps in expenses that Medicare does not cover. To offset these costs, most individuals seek out Medicare Supplement Insurance, which is there to help pay some of the remaining healthcare costs that Medicare does not cover. Medicare supplement insurance covers things such as copayments, coinsurance and deductibles.

Medigap policies cover other things that Original Medicare does not cover. A good example of this would be if you are traveling outside the United States and you require medical care in another country. Some Medigap policies will cover those costs, giving you added peace of mind.

Things that Medigap or Medicare Supplement Insurance does not cover:

Medicare supplement insurance typically does not cover long-term care, dental care, hearing aids, eyeglasses or private-duty nursing.

It is important to know the difference. Some insurance plans aren’t Medigap. Here are a few examples:

• Medicare Advantage Plans (like an HMO, PPO, or Private Fee-for-Service Plan)
• Medicare Prescription Drug Plans
• Medicaid
• Employer or union plans, including the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP)
• Tricare
• Veterans’ benefits
• Long-term care insurance policies
• Indian Health Service, Tribal, and Urban Indian Health plans
